Florida Heat is Here!
Now is the time to protect your pets from the extreme heat.
What can we do?
-
don't leave your pets outside during the hottest parts of the day.
-
try to schedule their walks before noon and after 3pm.
-
make sure they have plenty of water and shade
-
watch out for the asphalt, black top, concrete, etc. it gets very hot... if it burns your feet, it is burning your pet's feet.
-
never leave pets in the car. the temperature in your car will rise to 120 degrees in just a few minutes, even if you park in the shade. pets could suffer from heat exhaustion, heat stroke, brain damage or death.
-
be aware of plant food, fertilizers, and insecticides. they can be fatal if ingested by your pet.
-
pets can get sunburn just like we do. Animals with light-colored noses and fur on their ears are susecptable to sun burn and skin cancer.
Signs my pet is in trouble:
HEAT STRESS: heavy panting, glazed eyes, rapid pulse, staggering walk, vomiting, unsteadiness, deep red or purple tongue.
WHAT TO DO: get your pet into the shade, apply cool not cold water all over the body. let your pet drink small amounts of water, place ice packs or cold towels to the chest, neck and head only.
GET TO A VETERINARIAN IMMEDIATELY!
REMEMBER prevention is the best remedy for your pet!
