Cats spend alot of time grooming themselves, they still need our help to remove loose/dead fur that can cause hairballs in their stomache. Longhaired cats especially need lots of attention, as their coat is extremely prone to matting, especially in the beginning of summer. Their winter coat will shed making there coats look 'wollen like' as I call it, and more difficult to comb.

The matted fur will be uncomfortable if not groomed regular. In extreme cases it can harbour bacteria causing irritation to the skin. In this case I would recommend a lion trim, to start the coat over again. Although human grooming is usually thought of as brushing and trimming nails, paying attention to your cat's entire body is the best way to prevent health problems.
