Salmy Kennel
About usSalmy Acres Kennel is located in the beautiful Allegheny Mountains in Eastern West Virginia in the southern end of the panhandle. Relocated here from Virginia in 2005. The training area consists of 130 acres of open fields, woods and typical grouse cover. We have two kennel buildings heated and cooled for comfort that can house up to 30 dogs. Springer training for excellent upland hunting and field trial dogs is the first love and focus but gun dogs of all breeds, seminars and handler training also available.
I’ve had Springers around most my life. My dad got our first one when I was 8 years old, some 40 years ago. I got my own dog when I was 16 and trained her entirely by myself and hunted pheasants over her in Michigan where I am from originally on vacations for several years. I purchased a great little dog in 1985 and ran my first trial in 1987 in Pittsburgh. This dog, “Prince” sired Zorro and Zorro won/placed in just about everything entered in All-Age stakes. He ran up a total of 161 points including 17 All-Age wins. (unfortunately, Prince died at a young age of 2 after suffering a snake bite to the neck).
I turned Pro in 1991 training English Springer Spaniels and English Cocker Spaniels. I have judged over 30 licensed Springer trials including the 1996 National Open Championship in Kansas and the 2007 National Open in Minnesota. I also judged the Boykin National in South Carolina in January 2008. The seminars I conduct include dogs of “other” breeds for the most part - Boykins, Cockers, Labs and have helped train dogs and handlers to several hunt test titles and many darn good gun dogs.
