 Here are a few reasons why in home pet sitting is preferred over boarding or taking your pets along with you:

* Boarding- While most boarding facilities are great; it’s not for all pets. Pets that are not used to boarding may become ill due to the stress of being away from home and their families. This type of stress can cause anorexia, diarrhea and anxiety that can also lead to changes in personality. Also being in a boarding facility increases your pets chances of catching contagious diseases or parasites (fleas, worms, kennel cough etc) from other pets boarding. If your pet is not used to being around a lot of other animals or doesn’t like new people, this will add to the stress of boarding. 

* Car Travel – When deciding whether or not to take your pet with you on your trip keep in mind their needs while away from home and routines. Pets will need to be securely crated for their own safety while in your car. They will need several potty breaks as well as time to eat, drink, and exercise. Traveling with a pet can also limit your dining, lodging and activity options. A lot of hotels do not allow pets or have a weight limit and may charge extra fees. If your pet does not like riding in cars, traveling can cause the same stresses that are possible while boarding and you may not be able to find a veterinarian quickly if an emergency arises.

*Plane Travel – For a pet to fly, airlines require a health certificate (which only lasts 10 days), weather acclimation certificate and a traveling crate for your pet to stay in. Airlines have weather restrictions which could make it hard to plan a trip for the time you want. Cargo holds where your pets ride are not heated, cooled or sound proof. These conditions can cause stress or even injury to your pet.  

*Special Needs- Traveling with your pet may become difficult if your pet has special needs. Pets requiring medications will have to stay on a routine to ensure they get their medications in a timely manner. This is difficult if your pet medications must be refrigerated or given several times throughout the day. Also senior pets will have a hard time getting in and out of your car and a crate will be hard on their joints.
